If you’re craving natural beauty, winding roads, and a taste of tranquil village life, this part of the Lake District offers it all. A visit to the stunning Aira Force Waterfall followed by a peaceful lunch in Pooley Bridge is the perfect way to slow down and take in the region’s charm.
The Scenic Drive to Aira Force – A Lake District Experience in Itself
Our journey began with a drive through the Lake District’s country roads, weaving through stone-walled lanes, rolling hills, and occasional traffic jams caused by sheep lazily crossing the road — a delightful part of the experience! The scenery is breathtaking with open moorlands, distant fells, and glimmers of the lake appearing between the trees.
These less-traveled routes offer some of the best scenic drives in the Lake District, especially for photographers or anyone who loves nature. Be sure to stop at a few viewpoints along the way for panoramic shots.

Aira Force Waterfall – Nature’s Dramatic Showpiece
Tucked away near Ullswater, Aira Force is one of the most iconic waterfalls in the Lake District and a must-visit for anyone who enjoys short hikes with rewarding views. Managed by the National Trust, the area is well signposted, and there’s a large car park near the entrance.

The walk to the waterfall is relatively short but does involve some uphill trails and stone steps, so wear proper footwear. There are multiple viewing points, including a beautiful stone bridge right above the waterfall and another from below — both offering incredible photo ops of the 65-foot drop crashing into the rocky pool beneath.

The trail loops through ancient woodland, filled with mossy rocks, wildflowers, and ferns — it’s like walking through a fairy tale. There are also picnic spots and benches if you want to take a break or just soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

Pooley Bridge – Riverside Charm and a Hidden Gem Café
After the hike, we headed to Pooley Bridge, a quaint hamlet at the northern tip of Ullswater. Though tiny, it’s a scenic gem where the river Eamont meets the lake, creating a lovely riverside setting perfect for a relaxing afternoon.
We had lunch at The Secret Garden Pooley Bridge, a charming café with outdoor seating tucked behind some shops. It’s easy to miss, but once inside, you’ll find a warm welcome and a delicious menu. From freshly made paninis to cakes and coffee, it’s the perfect reward after your morning adventure. Don’t miss sitting near the river if the weather’s nice — it’s peaceful and gives you a front-row seat to the calm waters.

Pooley Bridge also has a few gift shops and a new footbridge (replacing the one lost in the 2015 floods), making it a lovely place to stroll before heading back.
